“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.”- Deuteronomy 7:9
As I went through my past week stuck in my little hole of a room pulling all-nighters for exams and papers, I came across this verse. God is faithful to those who love Him and keep His commands. Just like in a relationship, it isn't enough to just love that person. The Beatles might beg to differ by saying "all you need is love" but even the Bible says that God keeps His covenant of love to those who love him AND keep his commands. You can't merely obey His commands and think that you're being a good Christian. That's just being legalistic like the Pharisees, who were very highly respected by men but probably not so much by God. On the flip side, if you love the Lord but not obey His commands, then what about the Lord are you really loving? Perhaps the mere idea of God? That won't cut it either. You have to have both. But of course, it all springs from love. Because without love, God's teachings are nothing but mere words and obligations to us. With love, they are everlasting promises and letters of love written for us.
