Psalm 115:2-8

"2 Why do the nations say,
"Where is their God?"

3 Our God is in heaven;
he does whatever pleases him.

4 But their idols are silver and gold,
made by the hands of men.

5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but they cannot see;

6 they have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but they cannot smell;

7 they have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but they cannot walk;
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.

8 Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them. "

Many times we fall into the devil's snare whenever we're going through a rough patch in our lives; and rather than seeking the Lord, in our feeble minds we think "Where is God when I need Him?" and we start looking towards other things in our lives- tangible materialistic earthly things, and we create idols out of them to make ourselves feel like we are receiving that concrete feeling of security. Kinda reminds me of the Terror Management Theory. This theory says that we are all aware of our inevitable deaths, so when our worldviews are challenged or threatened in any way, we naturally increase our mortality salience and seek our in-groups that make us feel like we hold meaning in our lives. But the Word says that when we worship such idols made by the hands of men, we are no different than what these idols are and represent. They are mere statues. We sculpt and chisel hands and feet out of silver and rocks, but in the end, that is all they are. They don't have some sort of magical powers to make our lives better. God is the only One in whom we can place that full trust.
