" 15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever." 1 John 2:15-17

Everything that the Bible teaches us is counterintuitive of what society demands from us. We grow up believing that bigger is always better, more $$$ = higher success and better life. It's all about making improvements on the superficial things. Okay so we do get super rich, and we have everything the world could possibly offer--money, fame, nuclear family, dream house with a white picket fence.. What does all that amount to other than hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt?? I remember in Philippians 3 Apostle Paul said that he considers all such things rubbish. He contemplates his life on earth and life with Jesus in Heaven, because although he would love to be in Heaven and be with his Heavenly Father, he is torn at the fact that his purpose remains here on earth to spread the gospel to others who don't know. Basically, Paul has the right focus here. He has a specific goal in mind and nothing else matters in this world. The things of this world will rust, die, fade away.. but to live is Christ and to die is gain.
