"23 Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.
24 Put away perversity from your mouth;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips."
Proverbs 4:23-24
Verse 23 is probably one of my favorite verses that a lot of people misinterpret.. including myself. A friend of mine would always say how that was her life verse. The verse to her meant guarding her heart against boys.. and I guess she believed it so much so that she even went out and got the whole verse inked on her back.. Ironically, after she got it, she got into a hot mess and fell into a deeper mess involving dudes. Anyway, this time I read this verse for what it really means. I guess this verse can help you guard your heart from different kinds of distractions, including boys... but you can't disregard the second part of the verse: for it is the wellspring of life. "For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks." (Matthew 12:34) The things we keep in our hearts whether they're of good or bad things are what flows from our mouths. Therefore, (according to my study bible) "if we store up good things in our hearts, our words and actions will be good." Change our attitudes and the rest will follow.
