Mondays with Dox.

At work right now, bored out of my mind. But it's not too bad because I've got my hello kitty coloring book and a brand new pack of crayons from Julie!

There's this old grandpa named Dox who comes in to the store regularly- always gets a medium cup of vanilla/chocolate swirl and maybe some pecans on top, depending on his mood. I love sitting with him and going off into conversations about his life or what I'm going to do with mine. Today I asked him what kind of work he did as a director of the fish & wildlife division of Indiana before he retired, since he's always talking about his fish & wildlife days.. He told me about the different kinds of fish, his masters study on bluegills, and how they track fish and wildlife populations. And I could totally relate because back in the day, I used to catch like 20 bluegills at Fort Harrison! Hahaha- He's such a happy old man, it definitely felt like a Tuesday's with Morrie moment. I used to hate talking to the elderly. They just made me so freaking sad, because they all looked so depressed and wanting to die already. I just couldn't stand looking into their pale graying eyes and their frail wrinkly skin and bones, probably because I was afraid to accept my own inevitable fate of becoming just that. But old folks are like time capsules, filled with so much knowledge and so many memories, and a lot of them are great storytellers if you push their buttons just right. It's pretty astonishing how their long term memories are perfectly intact, yet they can't remember to take their food out of the microwave when it's done. (Wait, I do that too.. Hm)
