Romans 7

"2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man." Romans 7:2-3

Our relationship with Christ is analogous to the law that is bound between a husband and his wife. If you're married to someone and you go and have an affair with someone else, in almost all cultures and societies that is considered unacceptable and wrong. You have just committed adultery, thus you are a cheater. However, if your spouse dies, you are then released from that bind between the two of you. In the same way, we died to the law so that we may be with Christ. As Christians, we are no longer bound by sin. We are in a new relationship with Christ.
